Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol, pure alcohol, grain alcohol, or drinking alcohol, is a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid. It is a powerful psychoactive drug and one of the oldest recreational drugs. It is best known as the type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages and thermometers. In common usage, it is often referred to simply as alcohol or spirits.

Ethanol is a straight-chain alcohol, and its molecular formula is C2H5OH. Its empirical formula is C2H6O. An alternative notation is CH3–CH2–OH, which indicates that the carbon of a methyl group (CH3–) is attached to the carbon of a methylene group (–CH2–), which is attached to the oxygen of a hydroxyl group (–OH). It is a constitutional isomer of dimethyl ether. Ethanol is often abbreviated as EtOH, using the common organic chemistry notation of representing the ethyl group (C2H5) with Et.

The fermentation of sugar into ethanol is one of the earliest organic reactions employed by humanity. The intoxicating effects of ethanol consumption have been known since ancient times. In modern times, ethanol intended for industrial use is also produced from by-products of petroleum refining.

Ethanol has widespread use as a solvent of substances intended for human contact or consumption, including scents, flavorings, colorings, and medicines. In chemistry, it is both an essential solvent and a feedstock for the synthesis of other products. It has a long history as a fuel for heat and light, and more recently as a fuel for internal combustion engines.

What is the fuel efficency of 10% ethanol blend vis regular unleaded?
Q. I have heard that 85% ethanol is only 72% as energy efficient as regular unleaded but I can't find a source that tells how efficient 10% ethanol blend is. Let me know where you found the answer.

A. 10% eethanol , will equal 10% fuel mileage lost , I deliver fuel and I have ran my cars on both blended and conventional , it averages that way most of the time ... if you see 89 octane cheaper than 87 it is blended 89 eethanol , AND THE 87 is conventional . if the pump says 10% blend and 89 is more than the 87 , there is a good chance both are the same . 87 OCTANE + 10% ETHANOL = 89 octane fuel , 89 conventional , IS 65% 87 OCTANE + 35% 93 OCTANE

Why is it illegal in the United States to operate a car on 100% ethanol?
Q. There are exceptions for off-road vehicles like Indy cars and farm equipment, but it is illegal to operate a regular car with pure ethanol. Ethanol-burning cars need to be running on a certain minimum percentage of gasoline as well as ethanol. This is not the case in several other countries. So why is it illegal here, with burning ethanol releasing significantly less carbon into the atmosphere than gasoline, and it also being cheaper to produce, and allowing greater independence from foreign oil?

A. Because it's legal for off road vehicles, race cars and such - I would strongly suspect that is has every thing to do with gasoline and E-85 taxes - both federal and state.

Do you believe the rise in food prices is caused by the use of Ethanol, as has been claimed?
Q. Ethanol has been touted as an Alternative Fuel, although some say there are emission problems connected to its use. Ethanol, in our country, is primarily made from corn, and corn and corn syrup are important ingredients in much of our food products. Thus, the production of Ethanol is blamed for the rising prices in food. However, most of us do not know a soul using Ethanol as fuel, and there is only one gas station in Michigan offering Ethanol as an alternative choice. So why would Ethanol take the blame for the prices going up in food?
Asked by Me, Too - Thu Aug 30 12:25:12 2007 - - 16 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Some of the price increases, sure. Note that much gasoline is 10% ethanol, so you do know many people using it. And many more cars are produced each year that can burn 85% ethanol. The number of gas stations that sell that is expanding daily, although it is focused in the Midwest. A lot of fleet vehicles burn 85%, since they can be refueled at a central site.
