Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol, pure alcohol, grain alcohol, or drinking alcohol, is a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid. It is a powerful psychoactive drug and one of the oldest recreational drugs. It is best known as the type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages and thermometers. In common usage, it is often referred to simply as alcohol or spirits.

Ethanol is a straight-chain alcohol, and its molecular formula is C2H5OH. Its empirical formula is C2H6O. An alternative notation is CH3–CH2–OH, which indicates that the carbon of a methyl group (CH3–) is attached to the carbon of a methylene group (–CH2–), which is attached to the oxygen of a hydroxyl group (–OH). It is a constitutional isomer of dimethyl ether. Ethanol is often abbreviated as EtOH, using the common organic chemistry notation of representing the ethyl group (C2H5) with Et.

The fermentation of sugar into ethanol is one of the earliest organic reactions employed by humanity. The intoxicating effects of ethanol consumption have been known since ancient times. In modern times, ethanol intended for industrial use is also produced from by-products of petroleum refining.

Ethanol has widespread use as a solvent of substances intended for human contact or consumption, including scents, flavorings, colorings, and medicines. In chemistry, it is both an essential solvent and a feedstock for the synthesis of other products. It has a long history as a fuel for heat and light, and more recently as a fuel for internal combustion engines.

How can I prepare a series 4 aqueous ethanol solutions?
Q. I want to know how I can prepare a series 4 aqueous ethanol solutions precisely known concentration in the range 0.01% to 0.1% ethanol by volume. I have to use absolute ethanol to make the solutions and make 10ml of each solution.

A. First you need to work fairly quickly as absolute ethanol absorbs moisture from the air quite rapidly.Don't leave the top off the bottle! It also evaporates. To make a 0.1% soln by volume, you'd need to take 0.1mL and make up to 100mL scaling down, that is 0.01mL made up to 10mL To measure the alcohol you'd need to use a micropipette and know the technique. Empty into a 10mL volumetric flask then flush syringe with water into flask. Mix, then make up to exactly 10.00mL To be honest, wouldn't it be simpler to take exactly 1mL from a micropipette and make up to 1L Take your 10 mL sample. Then take 100mL of your 0.1% solution and make that up to 1L to get your 0.01% solution. You could make in between concentrations by other dilutions… [cont.]

What kinds of renewable materials can make ethanol?
Q. Hello, I am studying ethanol, the most widely used biodiesel made today. Right now, I only know of sugar cane and corn as two type of renewable materials that can produce ethanol. What other things can be used? Thank you.

A. you can use corn, sugarcane, rice, barley, wheat, sorghum, citrus peel, switchgrass, there are many things you can use. Anything with starch or sugars in it basically. Corn is most widely used (in the states, at least) because it yeilds the most alcohol per bushel for the best price.

What happens to the Ethanol in yeast after it is baked into bread?
Q. What happens to the Ethanol in yeast after it is baked and made into bread?

A. Ethanol is highly volatile. Since it evaporates quickly in air at room temperature, the heat of the oven causes it to evaporate much more quickly from the bread. There are only trace amounts of ethanol in the bread from yeast action, anyway; what little there is vanishes very quickly.
