What is the relation between the systematization of Ethanol and its chemical structure?
Q. Hey, I'm doing this assignment on ethanol. It requires me to explain the systematization of ethanol and also to explain the chemical process and link it back to its chemical structure and physical and chemical properties. I've been researching but all i can find are facts about fermentation telling me how to do it but i cant find any sites giving details of exactly what is happening chemically and phsychically and what the bonds and electrons are doing and how it effects the chemical structure. Any good sites and resources would be much appreciated. Thank you, DD

A. I'd start with a Wikipedia-like article on alcohols. Alcohols have similar properties to each other that are caused by the presence of the -OH group on the molecule. This includes high polarity, as evidenced by the relatively high boiling points of the molecules vis a vie their hydrocarbon analoges (ethane is a gas even at temps of -100C, while ethanol boils at 80 deg C), high solubility in water, ability to be fermented to the acid or aldehyde by fermentation (other alcohols also ferment), acid-base reactions to form esters, and many others.
