Amantadine is the organic compound known formally as 1-aminoadamantane. The molecule consists of adamantane backbone that is substituted at one of the four methyne positions with an amino group. This compound is sold under the name "Symmetrel" for use both as an antiviral and an antiparkinsonian drug. Rimantadine is a closely related derivative of adamantane with similar biological properties.

Apart from medical uses, this compound is useful as a building block, allowing the insertion of an adamantyl group.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 100% of seasonal H3N2 and 2009 pandemic flu samples tested have shown resistance to adamantanes, and amantadine is no longer recommended for treatment of the flu.

Can I stop taking amantadine if I feel better?
Q. I was prescribed both amantadine and zithromax for a bad fever/chest cough. I'm done with the zithromax (antibiotic) and know never to stop antibiotics prematurely. Is this true for an antiviral medicine too? If I'm feeling a lot better can I discontinue taking the amantadine, or do I need to take it to completion?

A. talk to your MD about it. but you should complete your prescription. if you stop prematurely, there is a chance that you create a resistant and it will be harder to treat.

Should I return the pills my pharmacist gave me?
Q. I went to the pharmacist, and they gave me some pills. The pills in the tube does not match the description in the tube, but i did a little Google-ing and found out that it is somewhat the same. Should i consult my pharmacist? (By the way, the pills are Amantadine, the description is a yellow pill with C 122, but the pills inside the tube are red, with GG 634.)

A. That is Amantadine, just a different manufacturer. Sandoz makes a red capsule with those markings. The yellow ones are made by United Research Labs. Someone didn't change the brand on your print out. On a side note, most flu strains are resistant to amantadine.
